Men's Hybrid Cruiser/Dragster - "The Red Back"

"The Red Back" - Hybrid Cruiser/Dragster

A little story to this one. My mate Kurt wanted a Beach Cruiser but he didn't want it to look flashy and shiny, he wanted it to look old school and Matte. So I let him try his hand at creating his own cruiser. Unfortunately I did not take pictures along the way as this was frame to finish in 3 days!

Kurt had the idea one day to revive his Road King Beach Cruiser. So he came to me for guidance. He chose the colours, sprayed the bike and assembled it all himself :-) I would say a massive win for his first time.

Steps:
Step 1. The bike had a lot of scratches and pitting in the paint. So Kurt spent around 2 hours paint stripping and sanding the frame smooth.

Step 2. Clean with wax and grease remover and Etch Prime

Step 3. Apply Matte Black base coat to the frame

Step 4. Paint the bike half red and fade it into the black at the back of the bike

Step 5. Apply a bunch of clear coat to help protect the Matte finish from chipping and scratching (which it is well known for)

Step 6. With the frame painted and all of his new parts, Kurt built his Cruiser. Pictures below. He went Fender-less on his bike. I have my moments of doubt because I have never done that before but it seemed to work really well for the style he was going for. There will be some more day time shots to come. These shots were taken outside my house at 10pm at night.

Parts purchased for this job:
19" Ape Hanger Handle Bars
Gold Stem
Sringer front fork
2 x 144 Spoke Chrome rims
26" Cruiser Banana seat
Sissy Bar
Springer Seat Post
Grips
Chain
Bottom End Bracket bearing set
Head Tube bearing set
2 x Oblique Gold Mufflers

Including paint, he got some changed from $600 retail.

The Unicycle (Name pending)

The Unicycle (Name Pending)

These days are full of new adventures. The other day I bought a Unicycle to learn how to ride it. However after taking it out of the box, I couldn't resist the urge to do what I do best, Metal Flake the Unicycle. I don't know if this has been done before, but I couldn't find anything in Google images that represents a metal flake unicycle. So here goes...

Step 1. Unpack the Unicycle.

Step 2. Pick a colour of Metal Flake to use... You can help me here, visit my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/kustomkolour and let me know which one you like the most. I also need a name, I have thought of "Unicorn" but I would like something a little more original and not so obvious... The colours I have to choose from are Green Sea Foam and Purple.

Step 3. Once the colour is chosen, I need to prep the chrome and lay a coat or two of etch primer. Once this is done, I apply a base coat that is similar to the chosen colour and then apply the metal flake, then apply clear, 1200 grit sand, polish and BOOM, the unicycle is pimped!

The Purple Mongoose

The Purple Mongoose

Now this one is really going to test my skills. There is some serious rust in this old bike. But it is an oldie and a goldie and it is for my clients son so I am happy to help out :-)

This is an original drop tail Mongoose 20" BMX. I am doing a full restoration job on this little bad boy. I can't wait to see the finished product!

Step 1. Remove all the stickers, rust and pits out of the frame.
Step 2. Etch prime and apply base coat of purple on this little beauty.

I have finished prepping the frame and painted up to the base coat, clear coat yet to come.

Step 3. Apply Clear Coat and store until other parts are ready for painting.

Clear Coat applied to the frame. Ready for sanding and polishing. Client will be coming around on Tuesday afternoon to inspect.

I did a wet sand on the bike last night and when I got home today I took some photos and started on the polishing. It really looks amazing now!!!

Wet Sand:
It looks really cloudy and rubbish now with no shine. Don't worry this will look awesome once it is polished!!!

First Polish:
Starting to look better. Second polish will really make the colour pop and make it shine!

Second Polish with bearing cups and seat post clamp installed:

The seat post clamp is the original clamp with the original sticker. Lucky this was aluminium and a gentle scratch with some aluminium foil and a polish with cut and polish brought it back to life and I managed to keep the original sticker :-)

Step 4. Prepare remaining parts for Priming and painting. These parts will be high gloss black including; Handle Bars, Chain Ring and Crank Arm, Front Forks.

Step 5. Now the build begins and finished :-) Pictures below

As a bonus for this client, I added a custom Twisted Chrome Kickstand. A bit of a personal touch :-)

Ladies Beach Cruiser in Pearl Blue - "Azule"

Ladies Beach Cruiser in Pearl Blue - "Azule"

This bike is for my good Pal Aaron's girlfriend, Rachel. This bike has to somehow make it's way to Brisbane when completed. Hopefully they will visit and stay the night with us and take it home again. We can only hope!

Step 1. Procure the bike and required parts.
Items I have for this build:
Fenders for front and rear (but no fender braces)
Frame - Ladies Beach Cruiser
Saddle - Soft sprung beach cruiser saddle
Headset and stem
Handlebars
Front and Rear Wheels and tyres with tubes
Crank and bottom end bearing set
Chain
Pedals
Forks
Rear Derailer
Pearl Blue concentrate

Pearl Blue clear top coat
Clear coat

Parts I need to acquire:
Fender Braces
Some nuts and bolts

Step 2. The current paint on the bike is in as new condition. I will etch with some Scotch Bright and then apply my Etch Primer and base coat. Will post pictures after this coming weekend.

I have completed the etch prime and the coats of Pearl on this bike. This one really shines!!!! and the pearl really shimmers. I am really pleased with the result.

Step 3. Apply Clear Coat over the pearl blue. Once this has dried and cured, a sand and polish will bring this out nicely :-)

Clear coat complete on all parts of this bike.

Step 4. 1200 grit sand to get rid of orange peel and then buff to give the high gloss glassy finish.

I attempted to do the frame of this bike tonight but after doing the purple BMX frame, my sanding arm (right arm) has had enough and wants a divorce LOL. Here is a progress pic of the top down tube. You can see how it is smooth and glossy rather than the rest of the bike that is rough and not as shiny. I will complete the fram and some other parts on Wednesday night.

I have now sanded and polished the rest of the parts (see video). See next step, assembly.

Step 5.

Assembly!!!! Part 1, It is now 22:25 and I am knackered!!!

I got up early this morning and started to assemble the rest of this bike. Lunch time has just finished and I took some photos in the sun. She is looking AMAZING! I just have the cables and sheathes to get for the rear brakes and derailer but for the most part she is complete :-)

The Crimson Horror - Men's Beach Cruiser

The Crimson Horror

If you have a look at the Chameleon bike post, you will see that I started a second bike. A men's beach cruiser. I have decided to do a Candy Red Metal Flake.

I have aptly named this after the Doctor Who episode called "The Crimson Horror".
So I will skip the first few steps I would normally take with sand blasting, priming and base coat as they are already done.

Step 1. Mix the Candy Metal Flake with the Acrylic Clear coat for first coat of flake. I will post photos of the flake as it goes on.

Step 2. Apply Clear Coat (with no flake) to build up the bike so I can get a smooth finish to cover up the lumps from the Metal Flake.

Flake is laid and clear coat is complete. Photos below of pre-sanding stage.

Step 3. Wet Sand all parts of the bike.

Step 4. Polish all parts of the bike.

Step 5. Assemble bike.

I will be posting a lot of photos in this post as I am really looking forward to the finish, the bag of flake I have looks really shiny and I like shiny things :-)

See you back here soon for more updates.

Step 6. Back to the drawing board on this one. Something happened with the clear coat and it went all milky. I will have to order some new flake and sand blast it back to bare metal again :-(

Step 7. I have applied a Candy Apple Red over the top and then I applied around 100grams more of the red flake. Now it looks Amazing!!!! Check out the video below. Wet sand and Buff to come shortly, I am so excited for the finished product on this one now!!! I think all flakes will now get a candy base of some sort!

Here is another video of post 1200 Grit wet sand and polish, you can really see the difference!!!

Last night, I assembled the majority of this bike. I have to make a custom mount for the front fender braces and bend the Sissy Bar at the bottom to fit over the axle (Shorter axle than my usually 144 Spoke Wheels). I have ordered a new crack and chain disc too, this one is just way too small...

Anyway, pictures:

As soon as it is finished I will take some pictures in the sun so you can see the flake shimmer like the video just above.
